FINALS DAY - 29th April 2007

Nice day for finals – warm and sunny. My duty today other than ensuring all goes to schedule, was to be assistant referee running the line with another friend of mine Chip. Thanks Chip for the help! All I needed to do was feed him with lunch, and get him pissed after the games and he would be happy lending his services.. hope your hangover was ok ..

First game.. Hendrix v Celtic in the new Barnesalona Cup.. 10h30am kick off - good game too with Hendrix taking the lead after 20mns and keeping that lead until 15 mns before the end through a handling mistake by the keeper from an indirect free kick awarded to Celtic. Led to extra time.. and the physical Celtic took hold to win the game 2-1 with a cracker of a second goal from 25 yards from I believe it was the man they call Wiggy..

Man of the match for me was Hendrix central defender - Graham.

Well done to the Celtic for winning the Barnesalona Cup! and being the 1st team to win it !

On another note, I think the referee had a great game – only giving away one yellow card which could easily have been more from the negative banter hurled at him on occasions… these poor refs ! :-)

The second game WKK v Uncle Bob Kick Off 02h30pm started with me reffing for the 1st five minutes as the ref turned up late (motor issues..). A large crowd of supporters turned up (large is obviously relative to the Barnesalona league) – must have been 30-35 people.. large innit.

A pretty dull affair to be honest – one excellent save made by the WKK keeper “Prof”, a few scrappy line defending by WKK on another 3 occasions. I don’t believe WKK had one shot on goal – please do correct me if I’m wrong in the comments section. End of 90 mns, score 0-0; extra time saw exciting moments of cramps, and more cramps.. 0-0 after 120 minutes. So, it was to be decided on Penalties – finally going to get some excitement out of this game.. the Bobs won the toss and opted to shoot first.. 1st shot went wide of the cross bar into the neighbouring bushes; WKK scored; 0-1 to the Kings; 2nd round – Bob scored as did WKK; score 1-2; third shot Bob hit the left post and ricoched out.. WKK scored; score 1-3; 4th round.. the Bobs scored; WKK needed to score this next goal to win the Cup.. up came WKK’s Colm, ex-Celtic player, who finished the game by scoring – final score 2-4. Must be said that the penalties taken by WKK were clinical – much respect goes out to to them for keeping cool heads and finishing them off clinically.
Well done to the West Ken Kings for winning the James Rettie Cup which was presented by James’s father Alistair to the Kings captain Johnny Boy. That’s 3 years running WKK
